Bimini: Gateway to the Bahamas

February 14, 2024

Bimini Island, also known as the Gateway to the Bahamas as it’s the closest located island from Florida, welcomed us with crystal blue waters. Upon our arrival, we immediately teamed up with our trusty buddy boat and opted for the quintessential island mode of transportation: a golf cart. As we navigated the narrow roads of the main portion of the island, we couldn’t help but be enamored by the quaint shacks, small buildings, and eclectic shops that lined the streets. It is here that we passed through Customs and officially landed in the Bahamas.

We ventured to the northern tip of the island and passed under the Resort World arch. The atmosphere switched to palm tree-lined roads and luxury cottages with manicured yards. The beach was lined with chairs and umbrellas.

After reaching the tip, we turned around and headed to the southern most tip where a rocky shoreline walk led us to the intriguing sight of a sunken ship’s remains. It was a moment that evoked both awe and amusement as we imagined the stories behind the ship’s journey to its watery resting place.

One unexpected gem we stumbled upon was the Dolphin Museum, a whimsical house adorned with treasures found along the shore and island. Even the concrete wall was dotted with colorful bottles.

Of course, no trip to Bimini would be complete without soaking up the sun and surf at Radio Beach, where we reveled in the beauty of the sunset and the rhythmic crash of the waves.

And amidst our beachside adventures, we spotted the Love Shack, a perfect find for Valentines Day.

But perhaps the most memorable moment was my impromptu quest for conch shells near the conch shack. A mountain of conch shells piled high next to the neighborhood playground. I asked the local fishermen if I could have a couple. They responded with “Take the whole thing!” I opted to take 4 as I still had to walk back to the marina.

Bimini was once the place to be and was once Hemmingway’s favorite hangout. Unfortunately a lot of that has been burnt down and left in ruins.

As our time in Bimini came to a close, we reflected on the laughter-filled moments, unexpected discoveries, and the sheer joy of exploring a new destination with cherished friends. Bimini, with its blend of charm, beauty, and humor, had captured our hearts, leaving us with memories to cherish long after we set sail for new horizons. Until next time, may your adventures be filled with laughter, your explorations abound with delight, and may you always find joy in the unexpected. Cheers to the magic of Bimini – a destination where laughter knows no bounds!
