Our family’s passion for snorkeling led us to the stunning waters around Sombrero Key, known for its incredible underwater beauty. However, the unpredictable sea conditions made us rethink our plans, and we decided to explore the nearby haven of Marathon.
As we sailed towards Marathon, we eagerly scouted for suitable anchorages, but many were exposed to the elements. Just when it seemed like our aquatic adventure might face a setback, serendipity smiled upon us. We discovered Safe Harbor Marina nestled next to Boot Key, and to our delight, they had one coveted spot available. Our excitement soared as we secured our berth, knowing that a whole new aquatic world awaited us.
The marina, much to our surprise, boasted a luxurious pool that beckoned us for a refreshing dip. While it may not have been snorkeling amid vibrant coral reefs, the pool offered a welcome respite, and we splashed around into the early evening.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, we strolled over to Castaways, a local gem renowned for its delectable Lionfish and other seafood delights. The atmosphere was lovely with seats overlooking the water.
The next morning promised another chapter of excitement as we had reservations at the esteemed Marlin Bay Resort and Marina, nestled further into Marathon. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as we reunited with fellow sea enthusiasts aboard Legacy, Coda, Puffin, and Fika. Annette, Michael, and the Fika kids played together, sharing stories of their Great Loop Adventures.
Our stay at Marlin Bay exceeded expectations, with each moment filled with laughter and camaraderie. The poolside became our playground, a backdrop for unforgettable memories. To culminate our maritime escapade, we treated ourselves to the delectable flavors of Stone Crab Claws at Fisheries, savoring the essence of Marathon’s culinary delights.
In retrospect, our journey from Sombrero Key to Marathon became a tapestry of unexpected delights. The twists and turns only added to the excitement, proving that sometimes, the detours lead to the most memorable adventures.
