Basking in the Sun at Bahia Honda State Park

January 31, 2024

Nestled between the turquoise waters of the Florida Keys, Bahia Honda State Park beckons with promises of pristine beaches, lush nature trails, and the iconic Bahia Honda Bridge. Our recent boating escapade led us to this enchanting haven, where the convergence of natural beauty and maritime adventure created a perfect retreat.

Arriving at Bahia Honda State Park – A Bridge to Paradise:

As our boat gently approached the shores of Bahia Honda State Park, the first sight that captured our attention was the majestic Bahia Honda Bridge. Stretching gracefully across the emerald waters, the bridge stood as both a testament to engineering prowess and an aesthetic marvel. Its arches framed the horizon, creating a picturesque entrance to the serenity that awaited us.

The bridge was once a railroad bridge that was transformed in 1938 to become part of the Overseas Highway. The railroad structure was too narrow for two lanes of traffic, so the new highway had to be built on top of the truss pans. The highway bridge was known for its unique design, exciting ride, and breathtaking view.

In 1984, two of the truss spans were removed, one at each end. The bridge was in disrepair and safety barricades could not keep curious onlookers out. The removal also facilitated boat traffic.

Docking at the Marina – Gateway to Exploration:

Securing our boat at the marina, we eagerly disembarked, ready to explore the treasures that Bahia Honda had to offer. A short walk from the dock led us to the park’s jewel – a pristine beach with powdery sand and crystal-clear waters. The gentle sea breeze whispered tales of relaxation, inviting us to unwind under the shade of palm trees or dip our toes into the inviting surf.

Nature Trails and Tranquility:

Beyond the beach, Bahia Honda State Park unfolded a tapestry of nature trails, weaving through rare plants.

Since 1870, botanists from all over the world have been visiting Bahia Honda Key to study the plants brought here by birds, the hurricane winds, and the ocean waves from all the islands of the west Indies and the Caribbean Sea. The very rare plants that are growing as native plants only on Bahia Honda Key are the West Indies satinwood, or yellowwood tree, the Catesbaea, Jamaica morning glory, and wild dilly.

Anchoring Offshore for Snorkeling Bliss:

The following day, we decided to set sail for a more intimate encounter with the underwater wonders surrounding Bahia Honda. Anchoring our boat just off the shoreline, we prepared for a day of snorkeling and paddleboarding.

To our delight, the sandy seabed revealed a hidden trove of sand dollars, their delicate shapes scattered like nature’s own currency. Each dive brought new discoveries, turning our aquatic adventure into a treasure hunt beneath the waves.

Bahia Honda State Park emerged as a maritime paradise, offering a perfect blend of coastal beauty and nautical exploration. From the iconic Bahia Honda Bridge to the tranquility of the marina, the pristine beach, and the nature trails, every moment in this tropical haven was a celebration of nature’s wonders. Our decision to anchor offshore for snorkeling only deepened our connection with Bahia Honda, turning our stay into a maritime fairy tale filled with sunsets, sand dollars, and the soothing sounds of the sea.
